“Dyamonde, with a y instead of an i plus an e at the end.” is truly a sparking diamond among girls. Sassy and confident in her new neighborhood, Dyamonde quickly knows her way around. She just doesn’t know why she doesn’t have a new best friend, until Free moves in. Grimes creates a strong protagonist in a familiar setting using easy to read chapters with plenty of white space. The black and white illustrations are child-like in their appeal and the patterned page borders add that little bit extra.
